How Much Do Music Lessons Cost? A Parent's Guide

What changes the price of private music lessons, how single lessons, monthly plans, and packs compare, and how to make every lesson worth it.

"How much are lessons?" is the first question almost every parent asks, and it is a fair one. Here is what actually changes the price of private music lessons, and how to choose the option that fits your family.

What changes the price

  • Lesson length. 30, 45, and 60 minute lessons are the most common. Younger beginners often do best with shorter lessons; older kids and adults usually want 45 minutes or more.
  • Private or group. Private (one-on-one) lessons cost more per lesson than group classes, but the teacher works only on your child's needs, so progress is faster.
  • Experience. A teacher who performs and has taught for years usually charges more than a student teacher, and often saves you months of bad habits.
  • Studio or online. Online lessons save you the drive, and the price is usually similar.
  • How you pay. Monthly plans and lesson packs usually cost less per lesson than paying one at a time.

Single lesson, monthly plan, or pack?

  1. Single lessons are great for trying it out or for very busy schedules.
  2. A monthly plan is the best fit for weekly students: one set time every week, and a lower price per lesson.
  3. A lesson pack works well if your schedule changes, or for adults who travel.

Hidden costs to plan for

  • The instrument. You do not need an expensive one to start. A good beginner guitar or a 61-key keyboard is enough.
  • Accessories. A tuner, picks, drumsticks, a practice pad, or a music stand cost little but help a lot.
  • Books or apps. Ask your teacher before buying; many teachers provide the materials you need.

Ways to pay less

  • The West Virginia Hope Scholarship can pay for lessons for eligible WV students. Read how it works.
  • Referrals: at Stars Music School you get a free lesson for every family you refer who enrolls. See the referral program.
  • Gift cards make lessons a great birthday or Christmas present from grandparents. See gift cards.
